What motor will a 12V 100Ah run?

Runtime is set by the motor’s current draw, not by thrust marketing. The table below uses typical published full-throttle currents for 12V trolling motors and a usable capacity of about 1.02 kWh (80% depth of discharge on a 1.28 kWh pack). Expect less in wind, current or with a heavily loaded boat.

Motor thrust Typical full-throttle current Runtime at full throttle Runtime at half throttle
30 lb ≈30A ≈2.7 hours ≈5 hours
40 lb ≈40A ≈2.0 hours ≈4 hours
50 lb ≈45–50A ≈1.8 hours ≈3.5 hours
55 lb ≈50–52A ≈1.6 hours ≈3.2 hours

All of these stay inside the 100A continuous BMS (1,280W). A motor that pulls more than 100A at full throttle — some high-thrust 12V models do — will trip the BMS, so check the motor’s maximum amp draw before ordering.

55 lb or 80 lb: why voltage decides

Most 80 lb motors are 24V, not 12V. Doubling the voltage halves the current for the same thrust, which is why 24V motors use thinner cable and smaller fuses. A single 12V 100Ah cannot run a 24V motor directly.

Setup What it runs What to check
1 × 12V 100Ah 12V motors up to about 55 lb Motor max current below 100A
2 × 12V 100Ah in series 24V motors, 100Ah at 24V Only if both units are rated for series connection; add a balancer
Native 24V pack 24V motors, 80 lb and above One BMS, one warranty, no balancing

We do not publish a series rating on the 12V 100Ah trolling model, so confirm with us before wiring two units in series. For a new 24V build, the 24V range is the simpler route.

Charging between trips

The outboard alternator is a top-up, not a charger. Small outboards typically output 6–20A, and the alternator is regulated for lead-acid voltages, so a direct feed will not fully charge a LiFePO4 pack. Use a DC-DC charger sized to the alternator, or charge on shore.

Charging method Typical current Time to full from 80% DoD
Shore charger, 20A 20A ≈5–6 hours
Shore charger, 50A 50A ≈2–2.5 hours
Solar, 200W panel 10–14A in good sun 1–2 sunny days
Outboard alternator via DC-DC 6–20A Top-up only while running

Charge between 0°C and 50°C. Below freezing the BMS blocks charging to protect the cells; warm the locker or delay charging until the pack is above 0°C.

Mounting in a boat locker

The case is 330 × 310 × 155 mm and weighs about 12 kg, so it fits lockers that will not take a Group 31 lead-acid block. Keep it out of standing water, strap it down, and leave clearance for heat to escape.

Item Recommendation
Fuse 125A within 30 cm of the positive terminal
Cable 25mm² for runs under 1.5 m at 100A
Terminals M8, 8–10 Nm, re-checked after the first trip
Mounting Upright, strapped, off the bilge floor
Environment Dry locker; the case is sealed against spray but not designed to be submerged

Trolling motor battery FAQ

How long will a 12V 100Ah run a 55 lb trolling motor?
About 1.6 hours at full throttle and roughly 3 hours at half throttle, assuming 80% depth of discharge, calm water and a lightly loaded boat. Wind, current and prop choice move that figure by 20–30%.

Can I use this battery for a 24V trolling motor?
Not on its own. A 24V motor needs two 12V units in series — only if both are rated for series connection — or a native 24V pack. We do not publish a series rating for this model, so ask us before wiring.

Can I charge it from the outboard alternator?
Only through a DC-DC charger. A direct alternator feed runs at lead-acid voltages and will not fully charge the pack; small outboards also output too little current to replace a day of trolling.

Does it have a built-in BMS?
Yes — 100A continuous, 1,280W, with over-charge, over-discharge, over-current, short-circuit and temperature protection. The LCD shows capacity, voltage and charge state.

Is the battery waterproof?
The case is sealed against spray, but it is not designed to be submerged. Install it in a dry locker and keep terminals covered; if the locker takes on water, raise the battery off the floor.

Common FAQs

Which trolling motors are compatible with this battery?

Use the battery only with a motor designed for a 12V supply and with maximum current within the published 100A discharge limit. Confirm the motor model, current rating, cable size and protection before selection.

How long will the battery run a trolling motor?

Runtime depends on measured average motor current, thrust setting, wind, current, hull load, electronics and reserve capacity. Divide usable amp-hours by average current for an initial estimate rather than relying on a universal number of hours.

What does the LCD display show?

The product specification includes an LCD display for direct battery-status monitoring. Confirm the displayed parameters and mounting visibility during project review, and keep the display accessible after installation.

What current limit should be checked?

The battery publishes a 100A built-in BMS and 100A maximum discharge. Compare both continuous and transient motor demand with this limit, and size cables, connectors, fuses or breakers accordingly.

Which charger should be used?

Use a charger compatible with the battery voltage and LiFePO4 charging requirements. Confirm voltage and current against the supplied model documentation rather than assuming every lithium charger uses the same profile.

Can it be connected in series or parallel?

The current product specification does not state a maximum series or parallel configuration. Do not build a multi-battery bank until LINEX confirms the supported configuration, BMS limits, balancing and charger requirements for the project.

What installation space is required?

The enclosure measures 330 × 310 × 155mm and weighs approximately 12kg. Allow space for terminals, cables, mounting, LCD visibility and service access, and secure the battery against vessel movement.

Which certification documents and warranty are available?

Documentation for UN38.3, CE and RoHS review is available, with a 5-year warranty. Confirm destination-market requirements and provide the motor voltage, current, charger, quantity and destination with the inquiry.
